What was the last thing you searched for online? Why were you looking for it?

The last thing I searched for? Not a recipe or a new pair of boots — but the key to unraveling a mystery I’ve been chasing for two years. A mystery that started with a dusty journal I bought in New York two decades ago and forgot about until my mother died, when I found it again in one of her boxes.

At first glance it looked like an affluent person’s private diary — polite, elite, untouchable. But the details didn’t line up. Strange turns of phrase. Odd references. It was too careful, too coded. That’s when I realized it wasn’t just a journal. It was a clue.

And once I saw that, I couldn’t let go. Even when people told me to stop wasting time, that I had better things to do. I stayed with it. What I’ve found buried inside points to something most people would rather not see: the early collusion between media empires and government, the espionage dressed up as patriotism, the lies we were all raised to believe.

That was my last search — and probably my next hundred.
